ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the why and how of writing for and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. When people think of the adage “Publish or perish,” the publishing part usually refers to publishing blind, peer-reviewed journal articles. For some faculty positions, if you do not publish, you will “perish” and not receive the tenure. If you are not on the tenure-track system, publishing may or may not be important. The career stakes, plus high rejection rates, coupled with increasing pressure to publish become a recipe for anxiety, frustration, and stress. The purpose of this chapter is to offer you the knowledge, strategies, and insights to publish journal articles and meet the challenges with persistence, confidence, and awareness. The good news is that attention to detail, monitoring the length of text, sending it to the right journal, using proper grammar, and so on are easier to fix than attention to the theoretical framework or significance.
