ABSTRACT

Our chapter provides an overview of history, clinical interventions, and research pertaining to self-hypnosis. We conceptualize self-hypnosis as autosuggestions (i.e., self-induced suggestions) that are initiated in a context perceived or defined as hypnosis. We illustrate how self-hypnosis can be taught and implemented in clinical settings to achieve a variety of treatment objectives both as an adjunct to heterohypnosis and as an intervention in its own right. We conclude with suggestions for future research and advances in the study of self-hypnosis.
