ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the theory and application of musical elements in hypnosis that encourage an integrative practice to move beyond medical-only treatments, thereby expanding the value of the practitioner and patient relationship as a factor in healing. Applying hypnotic techniques through the prism of music is a beneficial tool for practitioners of hypnosis and individuals seeking relief from physical or psychological symptoms, including the multiplicity and interactive complexity at work in changing our minds and behavior. The synchronicity and similar patterns between music and hypnosis such as rhythm, prosody, repetition, and novelty will be explored to enhance therapeutic encounters and accentuate hypnotic techniques. Clinical illustrations delineate the musical elements in the biopsychosocial application of hypnosis.
