ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses distinct types of highly hypnotizable people. The first type enters trance rapidly, scores high on absorption, and describes hypnosis as a somewhat more intense version of their rich and vivid waking fantasy life. The second type often takes time to achieve a deep trance, experiences hypnosis as very different from any prior experience, and is more likely to exhibit amnesia for both hypnotic experience and waking fantasies. The third type of people, who do not experience themselves as entering an altered state, is characterized by being extremely positive toward hypnosis, cooperative, and highly motivated to perform well on tests of hypnotic susceptibility—which they do.
