ABSTRACT

The chapter starts with a brief introduction to hypnodontics and its history.

The domain of hypnodontics usually entails, but is not limited to the following areas: pain amelioration, analgesia, anesthesia; bleeding management/control; salivation control and management; recurrent aphthous ulcer management; dental phobia management; habit control, e.g., digit sucking, tongue thrusting; bruxism; gagging control and management; smoking cessation and stress management. Each of these applications will be reviewed. Inductions as used in hypnodontics are addressed. Scope of practice issues are addressed as to what dentists should and should not be allowed to do. The integration of hypnodontics is covered, as practice management is a crucial determinant in whether hypnosis is a utilized modality of care.
