ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a model of what we have termed “suggestive presence” in the perinatal period. Professionals who work with pregnant women can learn to recognize the effect of their behavior and suggestions during this highly sensitive time. In particular, during labor and delivery, but also during pregnancy and even during the puerperium, a spontaneous trance state can be assumed. In the professional's communication, he or she must be aware of this, avoid negative suggestion, and encourage positive, supportive suggestion. This, along with other elements of the environment, supports the natural process of the labor and birth.
