ABSTRACT

Different concepts of suggestibility and hypnotizability are described and the theoretical controversy about the “correct” understanding of hypnosis and hypnotizability is presented. This controversy determined the hypnosis discourse of the 1970s and 1980s and still has an impact on today's theory and practice of hypnosis. Basics of hypnotizability and connections to other personality variables are briefly presented. The main measuring instruments are described and the purpose of hypnotizability testing is discussed.
