ABSTRACT

One of the emerging interventions that have stimulated hypnosis research and practice is mindfulness. Mindfulness meditation (i.e., mindfulness) is a system of mind-body regulation philosophy and techniques that Buddhists have practiced for over 2,500 years. It has become popular as a clinical method in the West since the early 1980s. This chapter will discuss (1) the essential facts of mindfulness, (2) the comparison and contrast with clinical hypnosis, (3) the introduction of the Touch-and-Return technique of mindfulness, and (4) a case illustration that integrates hypnosis and mindfulness meditation. Although they differ in history, concept, and methodology, hypnosis and mindfulness share commonalities and complement each other. For this reason, integrating mindfulness into hypnosis will illuminate the nature of both practices and enrich the practice of clinical hypnosis.
