ABSTRACT

Modernism and the desire for modernity in art were international trends during the twentieth century when Chinese painting as a special commodity became widely available in the global market. Artists everywhere expressed their originality by combining their own traditions with regional, national, and international art influences. In his later years, Huang Binhong (1865–1955) contributed to that endeavor. This chapter demonstrates that he not only advocated modernism in promoting “Guohua (National-Style Painting) as the Learning of the People,” but also manifested modern art in his transformative personal landscape painting style.
