ABSTRACT

In looking at how Lacan’s thought relates to our contemporary situation in 2023 (both philosophically and existentially), this chapter looks to the very particular relation between this specific understanding of the ethical and the emergence of a relatively new discourse and practice of ‘ethical education’ both in Ireland and internationally. Here, the chapter focuses on both the complementarity and the dissonance between Lacan’s ethics of psychoanalysis, on the one side, and the relevant discourses and practices of contemporary education on the other (especially as these discourses are specifically influenced by the philosophies of Paulo Freire and John Dewey).
