ABSTRACT

From the outset, WGS has been a discipline that has wanted things to change and has had a stake in the direction of that change. For the faculty in GESJ, an underlying commitment to transformation has led to an abiding willingness to experiment and to take risks, starting with the name. The history of the shifting and debated identifications of WGS practitioners, students, and indeed the field itself, makes it different from other fields where curriculum undoubtedly changes but identifications generally don’t. Content in WGS programming is necessarily as dynamic and shifting as the movements of power through our individual lives, as well as in social institutions, laws, governments, and communities. The seminar space, in other words, is essential in shifting the course from a tasting menu of disciplinary knowledge to a deeply intimate, personally transformative, and visceral consideration of what it means to learn and know.
