ABSTRACT

The chapter deals with the role of the Chabahar port in the perception of the elites of India, Iran, Pakistan, and Russia, which is gradually increasing its presence in this part of the world. The authors purport to define the interests in developing the Chabahar port by these elites, to demonstrate how their claims have been changing as some internal and external factors have seen dramatic transformation, and to speculate on further prospects of the Chabahar port in the wake of recent developments in the region. The authors invoked the multidisciplinary approach, including the Braudel method, as well as the methods of historical sociology and critical geopolitics. The analysis revealed that external factors such as the alteration of China’s regional priorities or the implementation of Russia’s pivot to the East could decrease Indo-Pakistan rivalry, with the parties abandoning zero-sum game logic and putting a premium on cooperation.
