ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a tension between the surge in the number of postgraduate examinations and the slow growth of the number of postgraduate admissions in China. It presents a comparison of the background information between a postgraduate and a non-postgraduate group. The study involves two secondary data analysis of official cohort data (2008–2021) on Chinese postgraduate admissions and the data of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) in 2021 for background information comparison of two groups (postgraduate and non-postgraduate). The chapter ends by providing some targeted suggestions from the perspective of students, universities, and governments.
