ABSTRACT

Good relationships with the parent and the child are always of benefit, it is good to encourage the family to trust each other with emotions which are frightening and confusing. It is also important that a parent is aware of any problems arising at school due to a bereavement, and permission of the parent should be sought if counselling is going to be offered to the pupil. This chapter considers a case study in order to see just how many individual feelings, emotions and ways of coping, come into play following a death in a family of five. It aims to illustrate just how each set of circumstances, create different problems for the child. The counsellor has to learn to be flexible. Often it is the counsellor’s understanding, patience and expeience which will determine which way to proceed.
