ABSTRACT

In this, the first chapter of the second edition of Qualitative Research Methodologies for Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, the authors begin by providing a brief overview of qualitative research as it has evolved over the years within the discipline of occupational science and the profession of occupational therapy. It is contended that the principles of qualitative research strongly align with the values and intentions of occupational science and occupational therapy; and, recognizing how qualitative research methodologies have grown and diversified, the authors offer their understandings for why a second edition of this book is needed. Next, the forthcoming chapters in the book and the authors are introduced, while highlighting the range of topics that are covered. Finally, thoughts as to how the reader can navigate this book to make the most of their learning are put forth.
