ABSTRACT

Participatory action research, encompasses a variety of approaches such as community-based participatory action research, action research, and participatory research; and aligns with values and intents of occupational science and occupational therapy. Despite variations in methods, aims, and other aspects, approaches aligned with participatory action research embody shared commitments for equitable collaboration with community members as co-researchers and enactment of social transformation. Its relevance to occupation-based scholarship has been discussed since the 1990s, but more recent calls for socially responsive forms of praxis point to the importance of further integration of participatory action research. In this chapter the authors outline key components of participatory action research with examples from a participatory filmmaking project that involved working with children with disabilities from rural India as co-researchers to identify, explore, and address situations of occupational injustices at individual and community levels.
