ABSTRACT

Among the many reasons that people make art in their later years are artmaking as a continuation of a lifelong career and as a yearning to embrace community more deeply, experience life in a new way, establish connections between past and future by sharing memories and traditional knowledges, and heal or express caring empathy for self and others. What might we, as art educators, learn from this vast, diverse population of older artmakers? This chapter looks at why might older adults create art, how they learn the skills of artmaking, and what artmaking means for their well-being in connecting with past and present generations.
