ABSTRACT

The goal of DAY-NRLM is to eliminate poverty and focuses on supporting women from disadvantaged poor rural families to come together as self-help groups (SHGs) for a wide variety of micro-credit livelihood enterprises to reduce poverty, through promotion of diversified and gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities. As per a December 2019 report, DAY-NRLM is in operation across the country through community institutions of the poor and influences the lives of over 6.47 crore women with estimated 59 lakh SHGs. A 2016 study conducted by the Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) provides evidence of the significant role DAY-NRLM plays in low resource settings of SHGs in increasing average monthly per capita income, assets, diverse livelihoods, and facilitating and increasing access to health, WASH, and education services. Through its large network of women members of SHGs, the DAY-NRLM offers an opportunity to nurture a community-centred approach that empowers women, especially from disadvantaged households, to improve women and child nutrition situation.
