ABSTRACT

To facilitate in scaling up edible oil fortification by the industry, a list of accredited premix suppliers and as well as of accredited national laboratories for quality assurance and monitoring is made available by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). In addition to ensuring a continuous supply of premix, advocacy and communication campaigns for national edible oil fortification are being intensified to generate awareness and create demand and issue policy on mandatory fortification. By 2017, 14 countries mandated milk fortification and of these 11 countries fortified milk with both vitamin A and vitamin D. Food fortification requires a three-pronged approach: strengthening enabling environment for designing, implementing and scaling effective interventions creating a market through increased consumer demand and increasing accessibility. Fortification bridges the gap between the need and actual consumption of required micronutrients through food.
