ABSTRACT

Anthropology as a discipline has been discussed, and it is evident that there is still not much clarity about what is to be studied in anthropology. There is mention of a lower anthropology as a mere description of cultural elements of other people and a higher anthropology that looks for the basic principles of humanity, of human behaviour that unites all people in spite of their apparent differences. This article foreshadows cultural relativism and attempts to transcend physical racism, but it emphasizes the hierarchy of cultures from primitive to civilization and advices against inter-racial unions as dangerous. There are stereotypes about who is civilized and who is primitive, which is strongly informed by the Western point of view and evolutionary theory.(Read on the 20th February 1928.)
