ABSTRACT

The three disciplines of philology, anthropology, and antiquarian studies are seen as related and necessary to grasp social realities, history, and evolution of any society. The following extract from the Times of India (dated 14 (7) February 1912) refers to the foundations and membership of the Bombay Anthropological Society, and one gets a sense of its membership of both oriental-minded British scholars and the highly Westernized Indians who are steeped in traditions of English literature and culture. There are glimpses into the mutual interest in each other and efforts at establishing ancient connections in terms of philology (From the Times of India, dated 14 February 1912, after being revised by Sir N.G. Chandavarkar).
