ABSTRACT

The trajectory of social theory in addressing environmentalism is often drawn by tokenism. While classical social theory rarely addressed environmental issues, the modern social theory paid adequate attention to the environment in response to many environmental movements across the world, especially since the 1970s. However, since 1990s, neoliberal environmentalism as propagated by the corporate think tanks and social theory needs to be given more attention, in spite of the fact that neoliberal market rationality adversely affects the social imagination of the people. The chapter tries to analyse how far the social theory is addressing neoliberal environmentalism.
