ABSTRACT

In the academic year 1992/3 on the Bradford University MA in Women's Studies, an optional course was offered, in addition to the main curriculum, which aimed to help women to learn about women relating together in a group, through understanding the experiences of the course group. An experiential group was offered initially as a forum for addressing this issue which also threatened to constrain the kind of learning opportunities which the course could provide. This chapter presents an account of some of the themes raised in the recent, year-long group. It analyzes women’s relations among women, based on the process of working with some of the difficult as well as positive feelings which emerged. The chapter uses notes kept by the facilitator and incorporates the findings of an evaluation which was conducted as a course project. It concludes by considering the merits of such a provision on Women’s Studies courses.
