ABSTRACT

Folds are perhaps the most intriguing of all geological structures. 1 Examples of closely folded beds that may be seen in cliff exposures invite speculation on the mechanism that caused the crumpling of the strata; the interest and beauty of the sweeping curves of great folds drawn in cross-section are aesthetically satisfying in themselves; but above all, the implications of folding with regard to movements in the crust of the earth have always assumed major importance in tectonic thought and consequently in the philosophy of geological science.
