ABSTRACT

The Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (DNHDD) was formed by the union of the two former territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and of Daman and Diu when the necessary legislation came into effect on 26 January 2020. The new territory is a collection of four enclaves near the west coast, in the north of the great Indian peninsula, all of which are formerly part of Portuguese India (variously acquired but all formally annexed in 1961). The enclaves flank the Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay), the island district of Diu to the east and Daman to the west, with Dadra and Nagar Haveli inland from there. Together they cover an area of 603 sq km (233 sq miles).
