ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a basic understanding of quantum communications and its use cases in the military. For this chapter, quantum communication technology usage in the military is focused on data encryption and secure communications using qubits. Further, it documents the quantum communication developments in China, Europe, the US and India and provides a comparative analysis. On comparing China and India, it is found that China has laid down roughly 2000 km long fibre optics and has achieved a further 2600 km via satellite-to-ground communication. Relatively speaking, India’s progress in achieving 300 m – quantum communication at ISRO campus – is rather quaint. Recognising the latter, this chapter provides a foundational yet in-depth analysis of quantum communications for policymakers, military personnel and the interested general public.
