ABSTRACT

Javier Milei’s decisive win in the run-off of Argentina’s presidential elections in November 2023 confirmed a pattern of anti-incumbent voting in Latin America. His victory underscored rising popular dissatisfaction with decades of Peronist rule and signalled a strong desire for radical shifts in domestic policies amid a worsening socio-economic crisis. Milei, an ultralibertarian economist with limited political experience, campaigned on a disruptive platform, advocating substantial reductions in the state’s role in the economy, the adoption of dollarisation and the abolition of the centralbank. This agenda aimed to tackle long-standing macroeconomic imbalances and stimulate economic activity to counter persistent economic stagnation, increasing poverty rates, triple-digit inflation, high levels of debt and negative net foreign reserves. 1
