ABSTRACT

Realizing the potential for animals to inspire wellness in their human counterparts, the field of animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) has grown exponentially over the past several decades. As the practice has developed over time, numerous terminologies have been created in attempts to define and standardize the intervention. Steps have also been taken to develop minimum standards of practice that protect both the animals and the people involved, though a call for further development of these standards remains. This chapter will not only outline the key terms and standards related to AAI, but provide a roadmap for practice inclusive of practitioner, therapy animal, and client considerations. As AAI is discussed at each level, the need to not only promote animal welfare but to allow animals to truly thrive in their roles will be presented. Finally, next steps for the field’s continued development are encouraged so that the impact of therapy animals becomes more widely available to all who could benefit from the intervention.
