ABSTRACT

In the new edition of A Guide to Reference Material, ed. A. J. Walford (Library Assn, 1968) vol. 2 is devoted to Social and Historical Sciences, Philosophy and Religion and contains expert information about the main bibliographies of history and related subjects. More detailed, but somewhat out of date, is E, M. Coulter and M. Gerstenfeld, Historical Bibliographies (N.Y., Russell, n.i. 1965). Older but still useful is the Guide to Historical Literature, ed. G. M. Dutcher and others (N.Y., Macmillan, 1931). For British readers the Annual Bulletin of Historical Literature, 1911 onwards (Hist. Assn, 1912- ) is the best means of keeping up to date, although it is highly selective and takes little notice of foreign publications. The Historical Association also publishes useful annotated bibliographies in its various series of Pamphlets, Helps for Students of History, and Helps for Teachers of History.
