ABSTRACT

The bulk of the literature is in French; in English it is usually necessary to consult more general works dealing with the Roman Empire, Islam and Africa. The medieval and early modern period is now served by a translation of the second volume of C. A. Julien, Histoire de l'Afrique du Nord, the standard work with a full bibliography, under the title History of North Africa from the Arab Conquest to 1830. Ancient history is well served by a literature based upon archaeology; A, J. Arkell, A History of the Sudan to 1821 and P. L. Shinnie, Meroe may be selected. There is little for the medieval and Muslim period until the nineteenth century; J. Spencer Trimingham, Islam in the Sudan is relevant. Ancient history is well served by a literature based upon archaeology; A, J. Arkell, A History of the Sudan to 1821 and P. L. Shinnie, Meroe may be selected.
