ABSTRACT

A skilful survey of the era of European domination comes in Colonial Rule in West Africa by M. Crowder. Lady B. Southorn based her Gambia on the older standard History of the Gambia by J. M. Gray. H. A. Gailey's History of the Gambia is more up to date. Three expert biographical works illuminate different periods: M. Priestley, West African Trade and Coast Society; G. E. Metcalfe, Maclean of the Gold Coast ; and R. E. Wraith, Guggisberg. Architecture and history come together in Trade Castles and Forts of West Africa by A. W. Lawrence. Limited in time but more detailed is J. Peterson's Province of Freedom, 1787-1870. The Life of Sir Samuel Lewis by J. D. Hargreaves gives a brief picture of life in the colony in the nineteenth century.
