ABSTRACT

G. E. Kirk, A Short History of the Middle East is still a useful introduction, although it concentrates on the modern period and international relations. S. N. Fisher, The Middle East is a similar but more detailed work. ?. Lewis, The Arabs in History is an excellent introduction to a subject treated by P. Hitti, History of the Arabs in more detail, although not always reliably, and thinly for the last few centuries. There is still no good general history of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, although R. H. Davison, Turkey is a valuable introduction. ?. Lewis, The Middle East and the West is a brilliant survey of the western impact, and S. H. Longrigg, Oil in the Middle East a comprehensive account of the development of the major industry.
