ABSTRACT

For a general bibliographical guide see S. N. Hay and M. H. Chase, South-east Asian History. For the traditional culture, ecology and authority patterns The Making of South-east Asia by G. Coedes is an excellent introduction. D. G. E. Hall's A History of South-east Asia remains the standard work, providing a broad over-all survey. Two decades of war have left a trail of books, mainly polemical, and few genuinely detached. The legacy of Spanish colonial times is strong, and many of the most important works are in Spanish. However, there are significant English-language studies, such as J. L. Phelan's The Hispanization of the Philippines, 1565-1700 and The Jesuits in the Philippines, 1581-1768 by Father H. de la Costa.
