ABSTRACT

Particularly valuable is The Complete Encyclopedia of Antiques, ed. L. G. G. Ramsey, which contains a cumulative index, glossaries and illustrations giving information on many of the minor arts to which no monograph has been devoted. The artistic aspects of fine printing are dealt with in S. Morison, Four Centuries of Fine Printing and T. M. MacRobert, Printed Books: a short introduction to fine typography, both comprising a series of facsimiles with introductory essays. Emphasis on the different aspects of the art of the book, manuscripts, early printing, colour-plate books and private presses rather than on literary contents distinguishes A. G. Thomas, Fine Books. The historical development of the art in England is presented in A. F. Kendrick, English Needlework, a detailed study not yet superseded, though B. J. Morris, History of English Embroidery is useful as a rapid, well-illustrated précis of the subject.
