ABSTRACT

One of the best general histories is The Book of Costume by M. Davenport (N.Y., Crown, 1966), which combines a stimulating text, subdivided by centuries and countries, with a wide variety of reproductions from contemporary sources. F. Boucher's A History of Costume in the West (Thames & H., 1967) includes chapters on twentieth-century dress and is lavishly illustrated. Further general coverage can be found in J. Laver, A Concise History of Costume (Thames & H., cl and pb 1969), L. Kybalova, The Pictorial Encyclopedia of Fashion (Hamlyn, 1969) and B. Payne, A History of Costume (Harper, 1965).
