ABSTRACT

The books are thought to be representative, and have been chosen with certain criteria in mind. The majority are suggested as suitable for use in the classroom as work books, the others for reference in the library. As the concept of one basic textbook is rapidly disappearing, series have been chosen from which individual books can be selected for use, example in topic work or by groups of pupils working in a project situation. There are many attractive series suitable for inclusion in the school library. Many of the series published for 13-16 years age-group seem to be directed towards public examinations, particularly the Certificate in Secondary Education. A flexible and varied approach to the teaching of history will demand closer co-operation and liaison between the class reader and the school library.
