ABSTRACT

For children under 9, two books are available; the first is the well-known Ladybird series. L. du Garde Peach, Julius Caesar and Roman Britain is lavishly illustrated with full-page coloured reconstructions and a simple map. H. Grant Scarfe, Roman Britain provides a simple text and the carefully produced full-colour illustrations are more authentic. For children 9-13 years age many useful books have appeared in recent years, some offering opportunities for model making and other practical activities. S. C. Boyd and others, Roman and Saxon Britain gives a brief account of various aspects of Roman life, followed by useful suggestions for things to do. For older secondary pupils below the sixth form, the range of books is rather limited, though many of those listed are also useful. H. E. Priestley, Britain under the Romans follows a general description with a detailed survey of various aspects of Roman life illustrated with photographs of the main archaeological evidence.
