ABSTRACT

R. J. Cootes, Britain since 1700 is good value with modern typography and illustrations, but there is a traditional look about W. J. C. Gill and H. A. Colgate British History for Secondary Schools, bk 4, 1688-1815, despite its extracts, lists of sources, work assignments and short book lists. For O level work T. A. Neal's From the Restoration to Regency, 1660-1815 is extremely good value, well written, up to date, with maps, plates and an appendix of source extracts. Longman's fascinating Then and There series, ed. Marjorie Reeves, goes from strength to strength. Teachers can combine them into patch-kits and use them for individual assignments or simply build them into the stock. The Clarendon Biographies have a high reputation for quality and readability. John Wesley by D. Marshall is a good example which assimilates the findings of recent scholarship.
