ABSTRACT

Books on the Empire and Commonwealth exist in profusion, though largely at a higher education level. The publications of the National Book League, the Commonwealth Institute and the annual volume of the British National Bibliography provide a source list. The resources of the Commonwealth Institute make a particular appeal to younger children. The Institute supplies a wide range of publications together with an advisory service, which can be of use in planning projects. Among books which are less specifically related to public examination syllabuses but which cover aspects of the Empire and Commonwealth for 13 to 16 years age-group, the following are recommended: M. Dyer, Round Table of the Twentieth Century; G. M. D. Howat, From Chatham to Churchill, 1750-1965; T. H. McGuffie, History for Today, bks 4 and 5. There are fewer books specifically related to the GCE O level or to the CSE syllabus, mainly because very few candidates sit examinations in this field.
