ABSTRACT

Alison and L. R. Drummond, At Home in New Zealand: an illustrated history of everyday things before 1865 is an inquiry into such areas as the construction and furnishing of settlers' houses, household effects, their food and clothing. A series of readers for 9-13 years age-range is A. H. Reed Family Life in New Zealand. Two titles are particularly valuable for 16-18 years age-group. First, Keith Sinclair, History of New Zealand is valuable as an interpretation, but possibly over-emphasizes the amount of controversy and the influence of radical theories in New Zealand history. Then, W. B. Sutch in The Quest for Security in New Zealand, 1840-1966 traces the social history of New Zealand, incorporating the eight chapters published as Poverty and Progress in New Zealand in 1942 (Penguin) in a story of the struggle of the people of New Zealand for personal, social and economic security.
