ABSTRACT

Understanding any period is enriched by a knowledge of the scientific ideas of that time and of the skills available. A study of the history of man and the growth of civilization might begin for younger pupils with R. Bowood and R. Lampitt's Our Land in the Making, bk 1. The earliest science, astronomy, made possible the calendar, time measurement and later navigation. I. O. Evans, Discovering the Heavens is suitable for older pupils, who will find it both interesting and entertaining. After the seventeenth century the development of science was so rapid that it becomes more difficult for the layman to follow. Well researched, eminently readable, it should be required reading for all those who wish to understand the growth of our industrial society.
