ABSTRACT

There has long been controversy about the value of teaching war history to young people. Nevertheless, war has played an integral part in the social development of mankind and as such must be of interest to the history student. Part of the material in this chapter has been chosen to illustrate this connexion. The technical skills involved in the using and development of weapons are as much evidence of scientific progress as the steam engine and the Davy Lamp. Depth discussion and project work among older pupils about the concept of war is often useful and informative, and for this the Schools Council/Nuffield Humanities Project, War and Society is invaluable. The ever-growing interest in collecting and model making is reflected in the number of books now available. Finally, a growing trend which could be used in school history teaching is scale modelling. .
