ABSTRACT

It has been well established that culture impacts both negative and positive outcomes of struggling with traumatic exposure. While posttraumatic growth (PTG) has been reported across cultures and geographical locations, most knowledge to date has focused on understanding the role of culture in pathogenic traumatic effects whereas how cultural contexts impact growth from the struggle with traumatic exposure remained limited. This chapter reviews current knowledge about PTG in cultural contexts; specifically, it discusses how culture influences the PTG conceptualization, meaning, prevalence, dimensions and manifestations, PTG process, tenets, and correlates.
