ABSTRACT

A dearth of empirical literature examines colonization, discrimination, and psychological distress among Filipina/x/o Americans, and particularly, gender-specific knowledge is limited. This chapter discusses the context of the traumatic experience for Filipina/x/o Americans, reports what is known about this experience and its impacts, and provides a potential explanation for a high level of resilience, intersectionality, and strong ethnic identity, thereby leading to posttraumatic growth (PTG) among Filipina/x/o Americans. This chapter also offers practice implications for enabling practitioners to provide culture-informed diagnoses, educate clients about racial trauma, promote awareness of potential negative impacts on their mental health, and implement culturally tailored interventions for the promotion of PTG in Filipina/x/o Americans.
