ABSTRACT

LGBTQ+ individuals are exposed to myriad potentially traumatic experiences due to heterosexist and cissexist discrimination and its impacts throughout their lifespan. However, research shows that many LGBTQ+ individuals can transform this trauma into posttraumatic growth. This chapter describes the research to date on PTG in sexual and gender minorities at the individual, interpersonal, and community levels and variables that may facilitate growth. It also draws on multicultural and social justice frameworks to outline how practitioners can facilitate growth across different socio-ecological levels. Finally, directions for research using intersectional approaches are suggested to capture a greater diversity of events and subgroups.
