ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of posttraumatic growth (PTG), positive change experienced as the result of one's experience of a potentially traumatic event and its aftermath, in children and youth. While PTG has a significant adult research base, the literature is less well-developed for children and youth. However, in recent years, there has been increasing attention to the growth process in non-adults. This chapter highlights developmental considerations for this work, distinguishes PTG from resilience, summarizes key findings regarding characteristics, resources, and factors relevant to the PTG process, outlines limitations of the extant research and needed future directions, and considers implications for intervention and clinical practice.
