ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to expand the understanding of posttraumatic growth (PTG) by exploring what is known as well as what remains to be acknowledged and known concerning bereaved parents during and following their caregiving roles with a child's life-limiting illness. The chapter begins with an orientation to the complex and dialectic experience that parents report as central to their caregiving and bereavement. Then the meaning-making processes that facilitate growth and allow parents to live within a destabilized experience are investigated. Finally, ways that parents move forward in their dialectic experiences are explored. A significant takeaway for readers to understand and incorporate into their work is a recognition, appreciation, and treatment of parents and families as holistic, including recognizing and supporting them through their complex and dialectical lived experiences.
