ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the complex relationship between the adversity of vision loss and subsequent transformational growth. Linley and Joseph's (2004) concept of ‘adversarial growth’ that captures the complexity of the relationships between negative and positive changes following traumatic experience to optimize positive outcomes is applied and their Organismic Valuing Theory of Growth through Adversity (OV) provides a lens to outline elements of this process. The chapter discusses the prevalence, impacts, and correlates of diverse types of vision impairment as well as psychosocial resources in the aftermath of vision loss followed by the presentation and analysis of a case study to illustrate the lived experience that constituted this process of posttraumatic growth (PTG), i.e., lasting positive changes following adverse experiences.
