ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses posttraumatic growth (PTG) in the context of traumatic loss. We begin by outlining the unique context of traumatic loss and how coping with this experience may lead to the development of PTG. We next review existing literature to identify factors that increase the chances of PTG and highlight the complex relationship between PTG and psychological distress. Within our review of the literature, we also address some of the criticisms regarding the notion of PTG. Lastly, we track the trajectory and pattern of PTG over time and describe the clinical implications of PTG among individuals living with traumatic loss.
