ABSTRACT

Color television may be described as black-and-white television with two additional parameters added, hue and saturation of color. Unfortunately, these two additional requirements cannot be added to just any black-and-white television system because of the stringent specifications that must be met to carry the color signal. Black-and-white television, while capable of transmitting excellent pictures, nevertheless has such a wide margin of error that the system must be optimumly adjusted in order to reproduce color faithfully. Because of the relatively long life and expense of a modern television transmitter, few improvements have been made in this area in the typical television station. Thus, almost constant attention and adjustment are necessary to keep the transmitter in proper working order. Up until recently it was common practice not to have more than one color monitor in a control room or studio because of the difficulty in making two color monitors look alike.
